Our Mission

Answering Africa’s
Quiet Call

Across North America, millions carry Africa in their blood but have never heard the music their grandparents danced to. Never witnessed the theatrical traditions that shaped their lineage. Never tasted the specific nostalgia of a culture fully alive.

The North American Center for African Performing Arts exists to close that distance, whether it is between the continent and the diaspora, between heritage and lived experience, or between what was preserved and what can still be celebrated.

We are not a museum of Africa. We are Africa, breathing, performing, and teaching in the heart of North America — and we intend to build the definitive institution of its kind on this continent.

“Culture is the soul of a people made visible. NACAPA exists to ensure that soul never falls silent in North America.”

Our Story

Born from a Conviction

NACAPA was founded on a simple conviction: that African performing arts are not artifacts of history, but living, urgent expressions of humanity’s greatest cultural inheritance, and they deserve a permanent institutional home in North America.

We are based in Los Angeles, home to one of the most diverse African and African-diaspora communities on this continent. We believe this city deserves an institution that does not merely represent African culture, but embodies it.
